Revamp of UWC's Chinese website to generate exposure for their newly opened Changshu College: Drupal Development & UX Design

The Back Story

United World Colleges, an educational organization that represents 16 schools around the globe as well as national committees in over 140 countries worldwide, requested Sekkei Studio’s digital services back in 2016. UWC schools are globally known to achieve academic excellence and their prestigious reputation is underlined by the fact that Nelson Mandela, Prince Charles & Lord Mountbatten have all previously served as the organization’s presidents. Her Majesty the Queen Noor of Jordan is UWC’s current president and has been since 1995. UWC opened their first (and only) China-based college in Changshu in 2015 and as a result called on us to revamp their existing website and generate further exposure for their Changshu college among students, parents & teachers based in China.

What we did

Here at Sekkei Studio, we consider ourselves experts when it comes to education marketing. Having previously developed websites and managed SEO campaigns for a range of schools & colleges including Wellington College, Istituto Marangoni, IFA, ESC Rennes and Lycée Français (and the list goes on), our understanding of educational communication strategies and school audiences is second to none. We therefore leveraged our expertise in educational marketing & design to provide UWC China with a fully-functional and well-designed Drupal website that fit UWC’s specific needs and better suited the expectations of their Chinese target market.

Web & UX design

After almost 60 years of existence, UWC’s visual identity is understandably set in stone but while the website’s visual branding left nothing to be desired, its layout & user-friendliness could still be improved. Our web designers & UX specialists therefore rethought the information architecture and user interaction flows of the website and completely redesigned the navigation between the different inner pages. These all important decisions with regards to visual layout and hierarchy were facilitated by the use of wireframing, i.e the creation of a framework that enabled us to push usability to the forefront and define the website’s structure in a thorough manner. In addition, we made the site fully responsive across all devices and designed & implemented a range of CSS transitions that animate the website when the user hovers or clicks around the on-site content.

Drupal Development

Drupal development

UWC China regularly share news and information about the school’s latest events and developments and therefore needed a website that they could update and modify at will. As well as requiring an easy-to-use content management system, UWC China wanted to implement several technically-demanding features such as video banners and multilingual support so as to replicate the feel and functionalities of the organization’s central website. For that reason, we built them a Drupal website on which they could easily update on-site content and incorporate the features they desired. Our developers have several years of hands on experience in Drupal development and exceeded UWC’s expectations through the implementation of a responsive video background, a series of Youtube & Youku video iframes and live social media feeds that picked up Western social platforms despite the website being within the Great Firewall of China.
